In Germany, legal advice is reserved by the Rechtsdienstleistungsgesetz (RDG): only a Rechtsanwalt admitted to a regional Rechtsanwaltskammer (bar chamber) — or a small number of statutorily authorised bodies — may advise you on an immigration case for a fee. Ask for the chamber they are admitted to and check the federal lawyer register (Bundesweites Amtliches Anwaltsverzeichnis). Some lawyers additionally hold the Fachanwalt für Migrationsrecht specialist title, which the chamber only awards on proven caseload and examination.

Fees are usually agreed per matter. For consumers, §34 RVG caps an initial advice consultation at €190 plus VAT unless you agree otherwise in writing — so an exploratory meeting is a bounded cost. Ask for the fee agreement (Vergütungsvereinbarung) in writing and check what is excluded: authority fees, translations, certified copies and any appeal.
O erro a evitar
Taking permit advice from a relocation agency or 'visa consultant' who is not admitted as a Rechtsanwalt. In Germany that is not merely lower quality — providing legal services outside the RDG is unlawful, and you have no professional-indemnity recourse when the advice is wrong.
