Por qué importa un abogado de extranjería independiente en España
Spain has one of the largest nationality-based gaps in Europe: 10 years of legal residence as the standard rule, but 2 years for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal. Whether you fall inside that group, and whether your residence has been continuous enough to count, is a legal question with a very large number attached to the answer. The Registro Civil and the Oficina de Extranjería decide your case and do not act for you — an abogado you instruct is the only person in the process who does.
Cómo verificar un abogado de extranjería en España
In Spain, use an abogado registered with a Colegio de Abogados, ideally one practising in derecho de extranjería. Ask for the colegiado number and confirm it with the colegio. A gestoría can lawfully file paperwork and book appointments, but it is not the same as legal representation and cannot advise you on a contested case.
Honorarios habituales
Commonly a fixed fee per procedure (application, renewal, appeal), agreed in advance. Tasas (government fees), certified translations and apostilles are usually separate. Ask for the hoja de encargo or written engagement before you pay anything.

Using a gestoría as though it were a lawyer. For a routine renewal that may be fine; for anything involving a refusal, an interruption in residence, or a nationality application, you want someone who is colegiado, insured, and able to appeal.

Is a gestoría the same as an immigration lawyer in Spain?
No. A gestoría can file paperwork and manage appointments, which is often enough for a routine renewal. It cannot give you legal advice on a contested matter or represent you in an appeal — that requires an abogado registered with a Colegio de Abogados.
Who can apply for Spanish nationality after only 2 years?
The reduced 2-year residence requirement applies to nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal. The standard requirement is 10 years of legal residence. Whether your residence qualifies as continuous is a separate question worth checking.
