France is the market where the residence clock is least intuitive: time on a student permit is generally not counted toward the naturalisation residence period, while a French Master's-level diploma can reduce that requirement from five years to two. Whether your own history falls on the right side of those rules is exactly the sort of question the préfecture will not answer for you in advance.

In France, giving legal advice for a fee (consultation juridique) is reserved by the law of 31 December 1971 — in practice, use an avocat registered with a Barreau (bar), ideally one practising in droit des étrangers. The bar can confirm registration. A préfecture appointment agent, a translator or a 'démarches administratives' service is not an avocat.

Agreed by convention d'honoraires, which is required in writing. Fees depend on whether the matter is an application, a renewal or a contentious appeal before the tribunal administratif. Ask what is excluded — timbres fiscaux, translations and any appeal are usually separate.

How do I verify a French avocat?
Ask which Barreau they are registered with; registration can be confirmed with that bar. A registered avocat is insured, bound by professional rules, and must give you a written fee agreement (convention d'honoraires).
